Job Summary The Rail Signal Test Engineer will perform signal
inspections and tests to ensure compliance with applicable railroad
standards, FRA Rules Parts 233 thru 236 and the AREMA
Communications & Signals Manual. The Rail Signal Test Engineer will
be responsible for the Installation and testing of advanced train
control systems. Additionally, the Railroad Signal Specialist will
perform signal maintenance and construction activities as assigned.
This position communicates regularly with their direct supervisor
and completes weekly/daily reports as required. The Railroad Signal
Specialist plays an integral role in the RailPros client
relationship. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Perform signal
inspections, and maintenance and construction activities as
assigned. Perform all tests applicable to highway grade crossing
warning systems. Perform all tests applicable to wayside signal
systems. Perform in-service testing of signal equipment as
assigned. Train test personnel Assist in outlining requirements for
phased signal system projects. Develop test documentation for
review and approval to support testing. complete test records for
all signal tests performed and any other reports required by the
applicable railroad. Implement remedial action on defective
conditions noted during inspections, pending repair. Comply with
all applicable railroad/client safety rules and procedures, FRA
guidelines, and RailPros’ policies and procedures. Provide clear
written and verbal communication of defective signal conditions.
Produce accurate and detailed reports for all signal equipment
inspected using the prescribed form(s). Develop workplans for large
signal cutovers to include hour by hour testing activities and
staging of personnel Build and maintain effective customer
relationships. Other duties as assigned or required to meet the
business needs Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Proven
ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to travel to
various locations for extensive periods of time. Proficient in
Microsoft Programs (Outlook, Excel, Word), as well as Adobe PDF
Suite. Ability to read and understand signal construction plan
sets, submittals, RFIs, and other construction related documents.
Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and
as part of a team. Required Education and Experience Experience in
the development of all signal equipment test procedures to include
installation testing, static testing, and dynamic testing. Have
advance knowledge of Signal Vital Processors to include
Electrologixs, VHLC, VPI, and Microlock. Have advance knowledge of
track circuits, wayside signals, switch machines, and grade
crossing equipment. Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Signalman,
Signal Maintainer, Signal Inspector or Signal Supervisor with an
operating railroad. Completion of a Signal Apprentice Training
Program or equivalent. Proficiency in digital technology including
use of tablet and/or laptop computer. Competent in using signal
testing equipment. Competent in performing FRA signal tests in
compliance with railroad standards and FRA Parts 234 and 236.
Preferred Education and Experience Ability to share knowledge of
signal standards with clients, FRA inspectors, railroad employees,
and other RailPros employees. Ability to lead safety meetings and
job site safety briefings. Additional Qualifications,
Certifications, etc Ability to pass "eRailSafe" background check
and railroad safety and security training. Valid driver's license
required Must be able to obtain all Roadway Worker Protection
required by the various freight railroads and transit properties
